The Algonquian is the primary language that the Shawnee individuals use to speak to each other. In the pre-colonial times, they were a semi-migratory nation mainly occupying places of Ohio Valley and extended to other parts. Apart from Ohio Valley, there are other places such as South Carolina, Texas, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Oklahoma, and Kansas that have been confirmed as some of the other tribal territories of the Shawnee tribe. Because of European-American pressure, the Shawnee migrated to Missouri and Oklahoma. Despite the limited number of resources that were available, there are some parts of the Shawnee tribe that did not move, but they later repositioned after the outbreak of a civil war. The population of the tribe that was later witnessed after the colonization were not the ones that were previously available because they reduced. One of the reasons of the lessening of the population was the civil war. Ailments like flu, smallpox, and fever also greatly led to the reduction in the population of Shawnee tribe.
There are various sub-nations that make up the Shawnee tribe, and Piqua Shawnee is one of them. The others are Hathawekela, Chillicothe, Kispoko, and Mequachake. The Piqua Shawnee was named after a mythical evil man who came back from death to lead a set to walk in accordance with the inordinate spirit. Clouds could be seen arising from the fire, and that was believed to be the leader. The Shawnee have always maintained a good sense of tribal identity.
The fishing and hunting were mainly completed by the men who were also warriors. Being on the farm was a task for the ladies. The roles of the ladies was to cook, farm and fend for families. A majority of ceremonies that the Shawnee tribe undertook were related to the agricultural cycle. Because migration to various places was a norm to the Shawnee tribe, they got to establish other new contacts with people they found in those areas. When they were in the foreign land, they exchanged goods and services so that they would survive.
The territory that was inhabited after the civil war was Oklahoma. The way of life of the larger Shawnee tribe is manifested through the Piqua Shawnee who does what, the larger entity does. The Shawnee are scattered in various parts. There are places that the Shawnee tribe enjoys full support because the authorities in those particular countries have recognized them. The principal chief, clan elders, clan men, and women make up the tribal council that is tasked with the running of the tribal affairs of the Shawnee. The tribe is creative, and they make items like pots, wood carvings, and beads. Apart from the wampum beads being used as a means to trade, they were important in their culture and heritage.
