Usana Health Sciences – A Background
Utah-based Usana Health Sciences Inc. is the multi-level marketing company behind a wide range of nutritional products and dietary supplements. Usana products, majority of which are produced at the company’s facility in West Valley City, are available in more than 20 countries through a network of “associates” or independent distributors. Usana positions itself in the market as a personalized brand of health products that allows consumers to think about their personal life choices, and how everyday behaviors can influence their general quality of life.
An immunologist and microbiologist by the name of Myron Wentz founded Usana. The products of the company can be purchased by direct order or from distributors, and not through retail channels.
Usana has three main product lines: Usana Nutritionals (basic nutrition), Usana Diet & Energy (weight management), and Sens? personal care (skin care). Ninety-percent of Usana products are manufactured in-house.
Health – Getting Started & Next Steps
Certain Usana Nutritionals products are on Australia’s Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG). Many products in general are certified by NSF International for accuracy of label under the “Dietary Supplements” category.
Finding Ways To Keep Up With Wellness
In 2011, Usana Essentials was tested by ConsumerLab.com, which reviewed 38 leading multivitamin/multimineral products in sold in America and Canada.
Various factors were considered in the test, which Usana passed, including compliance with U.S. Pharmacopeia guidelines on solubility, lead contamination threshold based on California Proposition 65 , U.S. Food and Drug Administration labeling guidelines, and certain index elements.
Usana products are sold chiefly through non-employee “associates” or distributors and online. Associates get their income from commissions, both from their own selling and that of their “downlines” (new distributors they have recruited). The compensation system of the company includes commissionable “points that distributors can earn for sales volume. Usana associates are bound by an agreement with the company which keeps them from making false income claims to potential distributor recruits, and from making health claims to market the company’s products.
Many athletic organizations have benefited from Usana’s sponsorship, thanks to the company’s “Athlete Guarantee Program.” The company selects athletes for the program, and should any of these chosen athletes test positive for a banned substance because of consuming Usana products, he or she will be compensated up to two times the money they make yearly up to a maximum of $1 million.
In 2006, Usana also entered into an agreement with the WTA to co-sponsor athletes, and five years later, this was extended. As per the 2011 agreement, Usana would donate $1 to Children’s Hunger fund for each and every ace that will be scored at all WTA tournaments, from Wimbledon to the end of the season.
In two years, Usana got titling rights for the USANA Ampitheatre, an outdoor ampitheatre that could seat up to 20,000, in West Valley City, Utah. Usana’s naming rights will continue until March 2018, according to an announcement by United Concerts in 2012.
